We Arrived At ATEK

Aug 3, 2017 After a day and two nights of travel we have arrived safely at ATEK! We were blessed with safe flights (mostly on time), some team bonding time on our long layover in the Toronto airport, and an inexplicably easy time passing through Peruvian customs in Lima. We arrived tired but grateful for a warm welcome and excited to see what God is going to do here. Please pray for us as we acclimatize, not just to the altitude but to our surroundings as well. First impressions of Peru? The hillsides are dry and brown but the city is alive with vibrant colour. The streets are full of bustle, and what looks to my eyes like chaos, and joy. There are tiny shops and people and dogs everywhere. The buildings are new, or old, or ancient, and a great many are unfinished. It is good to be here. Trip to Huancca Huancca (pronounced Wonka Wonka)

This morning the team gathered in our meeting room at 6:30 a.m.to wait for our taxi-bus to drive us to Huancca Huancca (pronounced Wonka Wonka). After piling in with Mila as interpreter and Pastor Freddie, we bumped, jostled and rattled along dirt mountain roads for an hour before stopping for breakfast along the highway, up high in the Andes Mountains. After breakfast, it was another two hours of bumping along before we saw the village of Huancca Huancca. Beach Corner church has been involved with H.H. (Short for Huancca Huancca) for every trip we’ve done for the past 10 years. ATEK started a work in this remote village about 15 years ago, starting with marriage classes and children’s ministry, to get their foot in the door regarding sharing the gospel. Now there is a vibrant church there. I asked Pastor Freddie how many families live in H.H., and I was surprised to hear it is 125. A Day To Relax

Today was our wonderful adventure to Machu Picchu! We had the privilege of waking up at 3:00 in the morning to catch our bus for 3:40 so we could make our train for 6:00. Oh how joyous that was… we woke up to quite a chilly morning, but the day ended up being a gorgeous day that wasn't super hot or super cold. The train ride was indeed luxurious, we had reclining seats, a table to play uno, and the great company of each other to keep us busy. They gave out free complimentary cookies that tasted like drywall, mmm delicious, and overpriced Pringles. It was quite the experience. Once we arrived we walked many many miles to get to the end of our bus line… just kidding but it was quite the line. We enjoyed the views of the streets, shops, and the workers. The bus was not as roomy as the train though, us vertically inclined people had to squeeze tight to fit but that was ok.
